May 2, 2007 · What you are wanting in the starter is the yeast count to explode, for them to have strong cell walls and to be healthy and ready to attack the wort. Using DME is the recommended method, but basically for making a starter, sugar is sugar, we do not transfer the taste profile of the starter into our beer.

You want the gravity of your starter to only be about 1.030-1.040 so you don't overload or stress the yeast. At that level there's not much flavors or aromas being added.

Mar 25, 2011 · If you are boiling you can add any dry yeast to the boil, including bread yeast. It is the same as using yeast hulls. Yeast are cannibals and they will go for the dead yeast first. -Revvy use grape nuts it works great, take one cup and add water boil for a couple of min in a microwave, then cool and strain add only the liquid to the fermenter.

I'm thinking one gallon water, 2 cups sugar (1 cup cane sugar, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup clover honey? haven't decided on the ratios - or just straight cane sugar). Haven't decided if I need to add vanilla extract, or possibly anise extract (that would require a run to the store).

Jun 4, 2008 · The only miniscule ABV comes from the yeast eating some of the sugar to carbonate, but not ferment. That will not stop it from freezing. It really doesn't matter all at what kind of yeast you use- just that champange yeast is low foaming, neutral, and temperature tolerant without giving a yeasty flavor.

Best practice, is it better to transfer the beer into the secondary fermenter and add a teaspoon of yeast energizer to the secondary and skim some yeast off the bottom of the primary to mix into the secondary?
