Closing arguments were expected Tuesday in the federal trial of three former Memphis police officers charged with violating Tyre Nichols’ civil rights in a beating that proved fatal following a 2023 traffic stop.

Lawyers for three former Memphis officers have rested their cases without calling them to testify in their defense against charges that they violated Tyre Nichols’ civil rights when he was fatally beaten after a 2023 traffic stop.

Attorneys for two of the three former Memphis police officers facing charges in the January 2023 beating death of Tyre Nichols rested their cases on Monday. Demetrius Haley's and Tadarrius Bean's lawyers said they wouldn't call any more witnesses to the stand,

Desmond Mills Jr., who testified against his former colleagues, broke down in court, saying, “I made his child fatherless.”

A former Memphis police supervisor says there was “no need” for five officers to punch, kick, and hit Tyre Nichols with a baton on the night he was fatally beaten after a traffic stop.

Mills and Martin have pleaded guilty to the federal charges. The five officers were members of a crime suppression team called the Scorpion unit, which was disbanded after Nichols’ death. Like Nichols, who died in a hospital on Jan. 10, 2023, all the ex-officers are Black. They were fired for violating police department policies.
