The ruling is unlikely to be the final word on abortion access in the state, with the expectation that the case will ultimately be decided by the Georgia Supreme Court.

Georgia's six-week abortion ban is unconstitutional, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney ruled Monday, permitting abortions to resume later into pregnancies. The order means the state can't enforce the six-week ban that took effect in 2022. Abortions may continue to be performed until around 22 weeks of pregnancy.

A Georgia judge overturned the state's six-week abortion law, that was signed by Gov. Brian Kemp in 2019, calling it "unconstitutional."
