President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday said Elon Musk and former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency" — which is not, despite the name, a government agency.

President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesdsay that Elon Musk will lead the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a non-governmental commission focused on reducing waste and cutting federal bureaucracy.

Elon Musk is backing Donald Trump’s transition co-chair Howard Lutnick to lead the Treasury Department, touting the billionaire CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald as a potential secretary who “will actually enact change” from the most powerful economic post in Trump’s cabinet.

While concerns were already swirling about Elon Musk’s involvement in the Trump administration, the first potential conflict of interest has popped up. Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (which he runs with Vivek Ramaswamy) put out the call Thursday for “super high-IQ small-government revolutionaries willing to work 80+ hours per week on unglamorous cost-cutting.

The department wouldn't be a department at all, but an outside group that can likely only make suggestions — unless Trump tries to axe current laws.
